Teaching Your Child to Write Their Name- a Multi-Sensory Approach to Learning

My 4  year old has been practicing his letters and numbers more and more and I am so proud of how far he has come! We have been practicing for only a few months now but I wanted to share some tips that have worked for us with you momma’s out there trying to teach your kiddos to write their name.

Before ANYTHING… teaching proper pencil grasp is so important! Before I even thought about teaching my son how to write his name, we practiced every day just how to properly hold his pencil. We worked on building those hand muscles by using tongs to pick up items and playing with play dough and putty. ( A fun game for him was hiding little toys and beads and coins in the putty and then he had to dig them out!)

Any time he held a crayon, marker or pencil, I would correct his fingers and gently place them where they were supposed to be. He learned very quickly how to hold a pencil the proper way, but if he would start to hold it incorrectly I would give him a small broken crayon to work with instead, forcing his fingers to hold the crayon with a proper tripod grip.

After they have mastered that skill, THEN you can move on to tracing and printing those basic pre-writing activities such as tracing horizontal lines, circles, vertical lines, intersecting lines, and diagonal lines. Pinterest is an amazing resource for free pre-writing worksheets. There are super cute themed tracing worksheets to help practice that pencil control and learn those fundamental lines and shapes first.  Once your child feels comfortable with that, then you can start introducing letters and numbers.

We started out with teaching him how to write his name first. He practiced over and over and now he is so proud to sign his name on birthday cards or on top of a picture he has colored. Children often can recognize their name before being able to write it out themselves, so have their name all over your house !We have it on the fridge, on a stepstool, on his bedroom door, we write it on the chalkboards in his playroom… the more they see their name, the more familiar with it they will be  !teaching your child to write their name

We bought this workbook from the dollar section at Target and he absolutely loves it ! They have letters and numbers and it comes with erasers that you can trace around

Though my son does enjoy plain old tracing and copying letters and numbers, it can get boring quite quickly for most children. Now is the time to start getting creative on how to teach them those necessary penmanship skills while teaching them the shape of each letter of their name! Printing repetition can be successful with some children, but others, like my son, need a more multi-sensory and hands-on  approach to learning.

Here are some simple activities that we do each week:

  1. Using shaving cream, have your child trace their name their finger-you can even print and laminate a piece of paper with their name printed on it and have it underneath the shaving cream
  2. Have them use bath crayons to write on the wall during bath time
  3. Fill a shallow tray or baking sheet with rice and have them write with their finger
  4. Using play dough to form the letters
  5. Use small beads, dry pasta, or stickers to build each letter (glueing small sticks on paper to form each letter is also fun!)
  6. Use [amazon_textlink asin=’B000PEN8U0′ text=’Wikki Stix’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’Newmommasurvival’ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’0a3a1a29-70b9-11e7-83f1-fb54e938ebf7′] to form letters (this is a great activity to bring with at restaurants!)
  7. You can get handwriting paper from the Dollar Tree and write out their name in a highlighter first and then have your child trace it
  8. Using chalk on a chalkboard, write out their name and have them erase each letter with their finger while tracing the letters (making sure to keep reminding them where to start on each letter-top to bottom)
  9. Write your child’s name on a piece of paper and have them copy underneath in their favorite color
  10. Trace it on a tray of colored sand (I get mine from the Dollar Tree)
  11. Have alphabet magnets on your fridge or on a baking sheet and have them trace the shape with their finger and then spell out their name out-loud.
  12. We sing silly made-up songs spelling out his name while we work
  13. Go through your old magazines with your child and have them cut out the letters of their name and then glue them onto construction paper making a name collage
  14. Have them write their name in the dirt/mud in your backyard
  15. Write their name outside on the sidewalk with chalk and then have them take a small wet sponge or brush to trace and erase each letter
  16. Use [amazon_textlink asin=’B004ALMPA8′ text=’Play Foam’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’Newmommasurvival’ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’302459fd-7588-11e7-b4d1-b3e9e78415b7′] to shape the letters. We got ours from the dollar section at Target and it comes with double-sided alphabet cards.

We tried using whipped cream because we were out of shaving cream… does not work so well… don’t recommend it. But Liam loved it at least because he just kept eating it

Some things that worked for us:

  • Something else that was very important for us was taking lots of sensory breaks when learning ! My son has SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) so getting up to move and get that Proprioception input made the world of difference for us. “Heavy work” was the most successful for our son for breaks- meaning we let him do such things as push a laundry basket around the room that was filled with heavy toys, do animal walks around the room or doing a little obstacle course…
  • Using a weighted blanket or “snake” in his lap always helped him to sit still a little longer as well as diffusing calming essential oils such as lavender.
  • Having a small child sized table can be helpful as they should be sitting up straight in their chair with their feet on the ground or resting on a small stool. The table should be just above elbow height for them.
  • Make sure you turn off the tv or tablet while they are working so to not distract them.
  • Calming music always helps my son to focus while doing his work.
  • If your child is showing no interest in starting or finishing their work, try a positive reinforcement chart! We have used a simple sticker chart in the past where Liam would get a star each time he finished an activity. Once the whole chart was filled up he got a new book or toy or a trip to somewhere special.

This has been the fastest year of my life. Time se This has been the fastest year of my life. Time seems to be flying by at an astonishing speed. Anyone else ?
I keep thinking we just moved here and realized it’s been almost a year in VA ! How on earth is that even possible?
At the same time, it feels like it has been years since we’ve been in Montana and a lifetime since Denver. I feel like Theo was just born but also I feel like baby Ben has been here with us for ages. Time is weird. I remember as a child, I would roll my eyes to adults talking about how fast I was growing and how time was flying. To me, time moved at a snails pace and I just couldn’t wait for the next big thing. To be double digits old, to be a teenager, to be out of high school… even when I became a mama with my first, I was always looking forward to his next milestone. It will be easier once he sits up, when he starts to crawl, when he talks, when I can send him to school. As a young first time, mom, with no real support system or family around, I think I was in survival mode for a long time. I wish I could go back and savor each and every moment, and not always be looking ahead. Now in this season of my life, it can be hard for me to look ahead at all. I can’t even imagine Ben and Theo older. Or my almost 11 year old as a high schooler.
I miss the days when the time between breakfast and dinner seemed like an eternity. When I was a child bored sitting outside in my backyard creating and imagining magical worlds and completely unaware what time it was.
Anyone relate?
We spent Thanksgiving down in NC with my family an We spent Thanksgiving down in NC with my family and had such a good time. We did a lot in just a few days, but Liam’s favorite part was catching lizards with his cousin. Look at that grin !
My favorite part was going through our old family slides and getting in a quick kayak trip with my sisters. It was fun to be all together for meals and seeing the kids hang out. Liam has never grown up around any cousins because we’ve always lived in a different state. It made me sad for what he may be missing out on. When I was a child, my dad’s side of the family got together for Christmas and the house was full with kids running around. I have some really great memories in that house. We do try to see my immediate family for Christmas at least every other year, and this year we combined Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was a chaotic but special time. I was really missing my sisters and wish they lived down here. But I’m actually closer to Illinois than I have ever been. And I’m only 5 hours from my folks now. It’s been 12 years this December since we left home to move out West. (Feels longer)
Holidays are usually the hardest for me, and I get so homesick. Now I have a weird feeling of missing my sisters in Illinois but also crazy homesick for Montana. These past few weeks my heart has ached for home there. I never missed Colorado like I miss Montana. My entire family misses it there and sometimes I wish we never had to leave. If only it wasn’t a 36 hour drive from my parents in NC ! 😩 And I do cherish all this time I’ve been able to spend with my parents here.
Do you live away from your home state ? Do the holidays make you homesick too?
Four months old ! Benny, you are so loved 💕 Be Four months old ! Benny, you are so loved 💕

Benjamin is celebrating his first Thanksgiving surrounded by family down in North Carolina. My sisters and their family’s drove down from Illinois and my boys are loving being around their cousins. It’s nice being all together this year.
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I have been using and loving @bendsoapcompany for I have been using and loving @bendsoapcompany for me and my kids for a while now, and I can’t say enough good things about this brand and their products. I just got some of their special holiday scents, and oh how I wish you could smell this box ! Mint mocha, peppermint, holly berry, chai tea … 😍 SO good. I need to order Winter Woods and Pine because they’re probably amazing and I think my hubby would like those.
You can create your own seasonal gift set or shop one that they have curated on their website. They are super affordable and high quality and come in a cute box ready for gifting (or for yourself😉) I know you’re going to love it. Everything is natural and great for sensitive skin. I am prone to eczema on my hands in the winter, and the goats milk soap really makes a difference.
Consider shopping small this Black Friday ! Their entire shop will be 20% off !
Please use my link in my bio (affiliate) to check out all the different products and gift ideas they have. The lip balms and bars of soap are perfect stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, or neighbor gifts. If you have any questions about products, DM and I can tell ya what I’ve tried so far and what I recommend.
It’s been years since I’ve done an intro post It’s been years since I’ve done an intro post , so here it goes!
I’m Natalie (or Nat) - mama of 3 boys, wife to Nate. If you’ve been around since the beginning, many years ago I was newmommasurvival where I blogged about my life in Denver. Then in 2018 we moved to NW Montana and my handle was changed to My Mountain Wild. We very unexpectedly had to leave MT and moved to NC last year, to live near my parents who retired there. Then I switched my handle because I thought we would be staying on the coast. This past January we ended up buying a house here in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia. (I was missing the mtns!) I’ve thought about going back to My Mountain Wild because my Etsy shop is still that name.. what a pain to switch it all back over again ! I should have just waited. Oh well ! 🤦🏻‍♀️
So a little about me - I have a lot of interests, & that’s why you won’t see me sticking to the “rules” of niches here. We moved to a cute house on a hill in VA with 22 acres & BIG dreams for this property. We’ve just had so much going on that we haven’t been able to set any money aside for fencing yet. Once those fences are up, we will start acquiring our animals that I’ve dreamed of for many years.
I like to garden, have ducks & chickens, a rabbit named Copper, a white husky named Bowie, & 2 kittens- Bagheera + Kit Kat.
I am a homemaker, homeschool mama, & homesteader. See a theme here ? 😉
I am on my 4th full year homeschooling my 10 year old. We are “eclectic” homeschoolers because we follow a mix of styles.
The forest is my happy place, & I love to forage with my kids. I have been casually studying herbalism for the past 6 years & enjoy stocking my at-home apothecary. I strive for a slower simpler life, but end up pretty busy. I am a wildandfree leader which is a local outdoor homeschool nature group that meets on Fridays. I love Jesus and my family fiercely. I like to share tidbits of motherhood , crafts, pockets of my home, outdoor lifestyle, seasonal living, & really anything that makes me happy.
So thank you for being here ! And if you’re new, please check out my blog mysimplewild.com
