September 6, 2017 / Monthly Favorites

August Favorites

August was a whirlwind of camping, weekend getaways, out-of-state visitors and getting ready for my kiddo to start preschool. September is going to be just as busy so before I blink and another month passes , let me jump on in to my favorites from August.

1.  Yet again, I am sharing an amazing beauty product from The Honest Company ! (Surprise, Surpise). You all know how I rave about their makeup… well I started trying out their skincare and I am just so impressed with consistency of quality products, I’m just a bit obsessed. Ok, a lot obsessed. I have been using the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01M7WGQ9P’ text=’Younger Face Deep Hydration Cream ‘ template=’ProductLink’ store=’Newmommasurvival’ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’e96540d6-929c-11e7-b42c-c95171ae2e8c’] all month and it’s definitely a new favorite! I have very dry skin and this one checks off all the must-haves I need in a daily moisturizer. It makes my skin super hydrated while still not making it oily. ( tip: I apply it and then doing something else, like do my hair or brew a cup of coffee. It takes a few minutes to really sink into the skin.) It smells SO good. It has an earthy scent that smells like something I would have in my diffuser. (probably from the chamomile and calendula). My skin is hydrated, dewy, and glowing after I use this!

2. Continuing with Honest skincare , I also tried out the [amazon_textlink asin=’B071W1N1SR’ text=’Depuffed Eye Gel’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’Newmommasurvival’ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’f95240bc-929c-11e7-b4b4-437a2bfd8d33′]. I can truly say that I didn’t even know I had puffy eyes until I started using this. I knew when I had bags after a late night or my lovely seasonal allergies were kicking my butt… but I started using this daily and have noticed a huge difference ! I can use it on just one eye and in under 2 minutes I can actually notice a difference between the two ! Plus the metal applicator is so refreshing in the A.M. It feels cold so it helps to wake up those tired momma eyes !

3. This month’s blogger is Tabitha Blue from Fresh Mommy Blog. You are going to LOVE her blog and Instagram feed ! Her beautiful bright and fresh photos are darling and I just love reading her blog. She talks about motherhood, fashion, travel and shares some delicious recipes…AND she has a YouTube channel that I am totally obsessed with now! She just bought a home and she is renovating most of the house, her husband doing most of the work himself. We are finally talking about buying a home here in Denver ourselves, and are looking at some fixer uppers! I am so excited to follow along while they “make their house a home”. Her bubbly personality is addictive and she is a genuinely beautiful women inside and out. So please go check her out ! Her youtube channel : Tabitha Blue

4. The essential oil I have been loving all month long is Peace and Calming. I have talked about this oil before, how I love to diffuse it with Thieves in the A.M. This month I have actually been using it topically for myself and have noticed my mood mellows out wonderfully with this one. I apply directly to the back of my neck when I am stressed or exhausted and it really seems to calm me down and let me think clearly. Peace and Calming is a favorite to a lot of people, and I really can see why! My son likes this one too and I have been using it diluted on the back of his neck during long car rides. You can get your wholesale membership here to get discounts and rewards on oils !

5. Last month I found a book for Liam at our favorite book store – Second Star to The Right.   I was thrilled to finally find a book that had his name in it ! The main character of It Came In The Mail is named Liam. The story is about how this child named Liam wants some mail and when his mailbox magically delivers all sorts of crazy things to him, he decides he wants to share all these wonderful things with his friends. The illustrations are silly and colorful. It has become a new favorite in our collection. It is always fun when you can find books with your children’s name in them! You can buy this book on Amazon here.

6. Last month I was lucky enough to win a pretty amazing giveaway on Instagram! I loved everything I got from Discovery Pack ( a camping subscription box) and loved that I got to discover and try out new brands. Besides all the t-shirts and hats you may have seen in recent Instagram photos, I also received this perfectly simple card holder. I am usually carrying around my giant bag and wallet.  I normally like to carry around all my reward and club cards, coupons, change… all that. But when I made the switch to use this beautiful little thing for a few days, I was IN LOVE. I can actually put my wallet in my back pocket which is great for exploring a new city and not wanting to carry a bag around. Or when you go for drinks with the girls, not having to lug a giant bag around is pretty great. What I like most though about this leather wallet… is that when I opened it from the sweet linen pouch it came in, there was a little card in there saying… ” The card holder in natural was deigned by FOXTAIL GOODS & was handmade for you! It was released as an edition of 50 on Aug 15. We hope you find it as special as we do! 10 of 50.” This made it seem so special and unique. I probably will never see anyone else with this cardholder. I just adore it !

This has been the fastest year of my life. Time se This has been the fastest year of my life. Time seems to be flying by at an astonishing speed. Anyone else ?
I keep thinking we just moved here and realized it’s been almost a year in VA ! How on earth is that even possible?
At the same time, it feels like it has been years since we’ve been in Montana and a lifetime since Denver. I feel like Theo was just born but also I feel like baby Ben has been here with us for ages. Time is weird. I remember as a child, I would roll my eyes to adults talking about how fast I was growing and how time was flying. To me, time moved at a snails pace and I just couldn’t wait for the next big thing. To be double digits old, to be a teenager, to be out of high school… even when I became a mama with my first, I was always looking forward to his next milestone. It will be easier once he sits up, when he starts to crawl, when he talks, when I can send him to school. As a young first time, mom, with no real support system or family around, I think I was in survival mode for a long time. I wish I could go back and savor each and every moment, and not always be looking ahead. Now in this season of my life, it can be hard for me to look ahead at all. I can’t even imagine Ben and Theo older. Or my almost 11 year old as a high schooler.
I miss the days when the time between breakfast and dinner seemed like an eternity. When I was a child bored sitting outside in my backyard creating and imagining magical worlds and completely unaware what time it was.
Anyone relate?
We spent Thanksgiving down in NC with my family an We spent Thanksgiving down in NC with my family and had such a good time. We did a lot in just a few days, but Liam’s favorite part was catching lizards with his cousin. Look at that grin !
My favorite part was going through our old family slides and getting in a quick kayak trip with my sisters. It was fun to be all together for meals and seeing the kids hang out. Liam has never grown up around any cousins because we’ve always lived in a different state. It made me sad for what he may be missing out on. When I was a child, my dad’s side of the family got together for Christmas and the house was full with kids running around. I have some really great memories in that house. We do try to see my immediate family for Christmas at least every other year, and this year we combined Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was a chaotic but special time. I was really missing my sisters and wish they lived down here. But I’m actually closer to Illinois than I have ever been. And I’m only 5 hours from my folks now. It’s been 12 years this December since we left home to move out West. (Feels longer)
Holidays are usually the hardest for me, and I get so homesick. Now I have a weird feeling of missing my sisters in Illinois but also crazy homesick for Montana. These past few weeks my heart has ached for home there. I never missed Colorado like I miss Montana. My entire family misses it there and sometimes I wish we never had to leave. If only it wasn’t a 36 hour drive from my parents in NC ! 😩 And I do cherish all this time I’ve been able to spend with my parents here.
Do you live away from your home state ? Do the holidays make you homesick too?
Four months old ! Benny, you are so loved 💕 Be Four months old ! Benny, you are so loved 💕

Benjamin is celebrating his first Thanksgiving surrounded by family down in North Carolina. My sisters and their family’s drove down from Illinois and my boys are loving being around their cousins. It’s nice being all together this year.
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I have been using and loving @bendsoapcompany for I have been using and loving @bendsoapcompany for me and my kids for a while now, and I can’t say enough good things about this brand and their products. I just got some of their special holiday scents, and oh how I wish you could smell this box ! Mint mocha, peppermint, holly berry, chai tea … 😍 SO good. I need to order Winter Woods and Pine because they’re probably amazing and I think my hubby would like those.
You can create your own seasonal gift set or shop one that they have curated on their website. They are super affordable and high quality and come in a cute box ready for gifting (or for yourself😉) I know you’re going to love it. Everything is natural and great for sensitive skin. I am prone to eczema on my hands in the winter, and the goats milk soap really makes a difference.
Consider shopping small this Black Friday ! Their entire shop will be 20% off !
Please use my link in my bio (affiliate) to check out all the different products and gift ideas they have. The lip balms and bars of soap are perfect stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, or neighbor gifts. If you have any questions about products, DM and I can tell ya what I’ve tried so far and what I recommend.
It’s been years since I’ve done an intro post It’s been years since I’ve done an intro post , so here it goes!
I’m Natalie (or Nat) - mama of 3 boys, wife to Nate. If you’ve been around since the beginning, many years ago I was newmommasurvival where I blogged about my life in Denver. Then in 2018 we moved to NW Montana and my handle was changed to My Mountain Wild. We very unexpectedly had to leave MT and moved to NC last year, to live near my parents who retired there. Then I switched my handle because I thought we would be staying on the coast. This past January we ended up buying a house here in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia. (I was missing the mtns!) I’ve thought about going back to My Mountain Wild because my Etsy shop is still that name.. what a pain to switch it all back over again ! I should have just waited. Oh well ! 🤦🏻‍♀️
So a little about me - I have a lot of interests, & that’s why you won’t see me sticking to the “rules” of niches here. We moved to a cute house on a hill in VA with 22 acres & BIG dreams for this property. We’ve just had so much going on that we haven’t been able to set any money aside for fencing yet. Once those fences are up, we will start acquiring our animals that I’ve dreamed of for many years.
I like to garden, have ducks & chickens, a rabbit named Copper, a white husky named Bowie, & 2 kittens- Bagheera + Kit Kat.
I am a homemaker, homeschool mama, & homesteader. See a theme here ? 😉
I am on my 4th full year homeschooling my 10 year old. We are “eclectic” homeschoolers because we follow a mix of styles.
The forest is my happy place, & I love to forage with my kids. I have been casually studying herbalism for the past 6 years & enjoy stocking my at-home apothecary. I strive for a slower simpler life, but end up pretty busy. I am a wildandfree leader which is a local outdoor homeschool nature group that meets on Fridays. I love Jesus and my family fiercely. I like to share tidbits of motherhood , crafts, pockets of my home, outdoor lifestyle, seasonal living, & really anything that makes me happy.
So thank you for being here ! And if you’re new, please check out my blog mysimplewild.com
