DIY Valentines Day Mantel

DIY valentines mantel

Valentines day décor does not have to be an overkill of reds and pinks! I love decorating for all the holidays, but Valentines Day is a little more difficult, in my opinion.

I don’t want my house to look like someone came in and just threw a bunch of tacky red and pink plastic and foil decorations everywhere. Ya know?

So since this is the first mantel I have EVER been able to decorate, I was pumped to set up this little space. I wanted a more natural/rustic feel without being too farmhouse. I also didn’t want it too be too “Springy” because we still have 2 feet of snow on the ground here and will for a few more months at least! Valentines décor doesn’t have to look like Spring.

Our fireplace is not a regular full-size, so that was the other challenge I faced. I originally found these adorable lanterns but they were too large for the mantel.

The first DIY was the focal piece. I went to my local thrift shop and found this lovely eagle photograph that Liam (my son) was giggling at as I put it in my cart. I ditched the eagle and used this perfect wood frame to make a simple photograph display. Look for frames that are real wood, and without a varnish, shiny topcoat etc. This frame was stained wood but didn’t have a shiny and smooth finish, perfect for that distressed look.

Before

How to make the photo display:

  1. Take the photo, glass and backing out from the frame.
  2. Using plyers, take the staples out from both the vertical sides. (or vise versa if you want the frame displayed vertical instead of horizontal) If your frame does not have staples to hold the backing in, you can use a staple gun to make your own!
  3. Wipe down your frame with a cloth to get any dust or dirt off.
  4. Using a paint brush, paint very light strokes of white (or any color) to achieve a worn rustic look. You can also paint the whole frame and then use sandpaper to distress it!
  5. Once dry, I tied a piece of twine to one end of the staple to the other, making it as taught as possible. This will be wear you hang your photos from, so make sure the knot is tight! I used mini fabric clothespins to hold some small photos. You can find these in the bullseye section of Target sometimes and at Michaels Craft Store or Joanns Fabric Store. Use washi tape to make cute clothespins in whatever color and pattern you like!
After!

Our next DIY is even easier! I found this wood heart for $3 in the bullseye section of Target. They have a similar one at the Dollar Tree as well. Since there were already perfect sections/lines on this piece, I painted it ombre starting with the darker color on the bottom.

How to paint an ombre wood heart:

  1. I only used two colors here, a light pink paint and then a white.
  2. I started off with the pink color as-is for the bottom section then kept adding more and more white paint as I went up! See? SO EASY!

The last DIY is the wood heart banner.

  1. I found this at the Dollar Tree for a buck and knew I wanted to make something out of it! I took it apart by using plyers to pull the staples out.
  2. I flipped them over so the blank side was up and painted them black.
  3. After the coat of black dried, I painted them using a similar technique as the frame. I just did light strokes and chose a matte light grey color.
  4. After they dried I flipped them over and hot glued them along a long piece of twine. Easy peasy!

Everything pictured was super affordable!

This candle holder and candle were thrifted for less than $5 total. The faux little succulent was from Target for I believe $3.

I wrapped battery-operated twinkle lights around the frame and then fed the end of it into this little twig ball. I use these all over the house for décor and bought them on clearance from Target years ago. Here is a similar vase filler.

I like how it all came together! Just a couple touches of pink without being way too girly and it has a simple rustic feel to it. (I will also let you in on a secret! That wood heart is there because I needed something to cover up the outlets that are there! This worked perfectly

I hope this post gave you some ideas on how to decorate your own mantel and I would love to know how you decorate your home for valentines day!

This is such a fun and cute project! Whilst I’m personally a HUGE fan of everything red and pink, I love that this projects shows that you CAN celebrate Valentine’s without going over the top with so much colour, as they ARE plenty of people who aren’t into that! Having a mantel to decorate must be so much fun, too. I can just imagine all the stockings hanging there during Christmas 🙊

Home education with a busy crazy toddler... oh, th Home education with a busy crazy toddler... oh, the struggle is real 😆
He craves constant attention, needs a snack every 35 minutes, wants to climb on everything and everyone around him, and he cannot communicate his needs yet, but has THE biggest emotions.
My older son struggles with concentrating on his work anyways, so throw a loud toddler in the mix that just wants brother to play with him... it can feel chaotic.

So we take lots of wiggle and play breaks and it really benefits us all. I get 10 min to clean up or kick my feet up. The boys get to spend quality time together, use their imaginations, run around, and get their wiggles out.
And I'm trying to get better at setting up mess-free activities and busy work for Theo to keep him occupied for longer.
It hit me today as I observed this absolutely adorable scene of them playing restaurant while I made lunch...
If Liam was in school, Theo would only see him a few hours a day during the week and on weekends. They'd both be missing out on so much.

I know that's "normal" for any family's that choose public school, and there's of course nothing wrong with that at all. I'm just glad we all get to spend our days together, even when they're difficult.

This life we have chosen can be so draining. I am really starting to feel the exhaustion that comes along with pregnancy these days. But I see so many beautiful moments like this throughout the week, and I feel very blessed indeed that we get to do life this way.
Yesterday we visited @seaquestlynchburg and had su Yesterday we visited @seaquestlynchburg and had such an amazing time ! The highlights were the stingrays showing off and squirting water at us, and the birds eating out of Liam's hand. For Theodore, it was all just fascinating. Every animal got an "ooo" and "awww" and wide eyes and a pudgy little finger pointing at it or a little hand excitedly waving high.
Then we spent some time at the little toddler play area in the mall where Theo hugged every kid there and had the biggest smile on his face the whole time.
I would say this week's homeschool field trip was a success!
Next week we're checking out our local library, and the week after that, the children's museum.
It's always so fun to explore a new area. ☺️

I don't always get a few quiet moments to myself, I don't always get a few quiet moments to myself, but when I do, I make the most of it !
I put on a homemaker or homesteading podcast, light a candle, sip hot tea...
It gives me time to slow down and take deep breaths, and relax a bit. (And I'll be honest, this time often also has a good snack involved or some dark chocolate I hid on the top shelf of the pantry 😆)

I spent some time yesterday during nap time restocking some herbs in my new apothecary cabinet. I filled jars of nettle, peppermint, red raspberry leaf, and rosemary. These dark amber jars are on Amazon and pretty perfect for storing herbs !
I'm dreaming of what herbs I'll be drying from my garden to add to these shelves 🤩

I'm curious- if you use herbs in your home, what are your top 3 most used ?
S'mores, burning brush, snuggling up with a blanke S'mores, burning brush, snuggling up with a blanket, and admiring our new house on the hill.

We've been busy setting up our new home, finding places for everything, and thrifting some furniture. Theo is already use to the new house and his new room. He loves the playroom in the basement and having a real bath tub!
Liam had his first playdate on Friday, and we're planning out his lego table this week. Nate has been busy fixing things around the house and helping me hang art and things all over.
It feels good to be finding a new rythm again. To have a regular bath night, and cooking big meals we eat around the table my grandpa built. We're dreaming of the garden this Spring, what fencing we can put up for animals, what color to paint the house...
and it just feels so so good to be in our own home again where we can do what we want and plan and dream for the future.
We got this gorgeous 1964 Thomasville china hutch We got this gorgeous 1964 Thomasville china hutch for $100 off FB marketplace! 🤩 It took 2 trips an hour away to bring this big gal home.
This is by far my most favorite piece of furniture I've ever owned. My original plan for this piece was to hold and display all my china, tea cups, and table linens.
But I also needed storage for all my herbs, herbal books, tinctures, salves, etc. I added a few jars of herbs and knew this needed to be a moody apothecary cabinet stat!
I threw a bunch of other decor and little things I love in there. I'm sure I'll rearrange it a dozen times before I love it. My goal is for two whole shelves to be filled with dried herbs from our garden by Fall. 🤍
I've got candles in a drawer, tablecloths in another, and the top drawer is random things, supplies and tinctures. The right cupboard is holding all my vases & jars, and the left cupboard is holding all my herbal and homesteading magazines.

What is the best FB marketplace find you've scored ??
I think this is my favorite!
