Outdoor Winter Bucket List For Kids

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the Winter months can seem to go on forever. The Christmas decorations have come down, the shopping is finally over, and now we are left with 3+ months left of snow . Winters are long in NW Montana so we have to keep ourselves busy and embrace the snow and cold instead of dreading it. I use to hate Winter growing up in the Midwest. It meant shoveling snow, not feeling your fingers, and wearing a million layers every time you had to go outside. I never really saw or appreciated the beauty that Winter brings.

The sun rarely makes an appearance here in the Winter, so when it peeks out, even for just a moment, I throw on my coat and boots and run outside to feel it on my cheeks. It makes me appreciate the sun and warmth that much more. (And taking your Vitamin D when the Sun doesn’t make an appearance for days is crucial!) The freezing crisp air can be invigorating and the forest seems so quiet in the Winter. We can stand there for a few moments in silence and here the crunching of little paws in the distant, a squirrel munching on something in the tree above us, and a bird singing in the distance. It seems even more peaceful and serine during the cold months. Everything is sleepy and still.

I want my son to welcome Winter and enjoy its beauty, not to dread it. The Winter season is a time for us to slow down, create, spend time with a good book, and focus on ourselves. And as much as I love cozying up inside, It’s also a time to get outside and enjoy the wildness of the forest in Winter. (Or your own backyard!)

Snow-covered trails means a better chance of finding animal tracks. My son has a little animal tracks pocket book that he keeps in his pack at all times, and it helps him identify the tracks he finds. He likes to imagine what that animal was doing while trudging through the snow and creates a story from the tracks he finds.

We bring out our snowshoes, go sledding, walk on frozen ponds and sweep away the snow to find frozen bubbles… We make snow angels and build igloos around our campfire pit. And after every adventure we hang up our wet clothes to dry and snuggle up with a hot cup of cocoa or tea and warm our hands on the mugs.

I think it’s important to get your kids outside during the cold months. It gets them away from screens, encourages exercise, and it makes us parents get off our phones and away from the chores to spend some quality time together as a family.

So for those of you trying to love Winter, or at least appreciate it, I made an Outdoor Winter Bucket List for you to share with your family and give you ideas on what to do outside! I left a couple spots blank so you can write in your own ideas. Hang it on your fridge and check it off as you go. It’s always fun to see what all we have done at the end of a season.

I made two color options for the printable. Click on the images below to print the PDF.

outdoor winter bucket list for kids free printable checklist
  1. Build a snowman – bring out an old hat, find some sticks for arms, rocks for eyes, a pine-cone for a nose… I’m sure we can all reminisce of building snowmen as children. I can still remember how proud I would feel when a towering snowman was in our front yard for all to see
  2. Go snowshoeing – We received snowshoes from my parents last Christmas and have been loving them this year! We keep them in the garage by the back door so we can throw them on and go.
  3. Make snow paint- We found a super simple recipe here. You can have your children squirt or spray the paint on the snow to make pictures, play tic-tac-toe, make a treasure map etc
  4. Make bird feeders- there are SO many ways to make bird feeders! You can cover pinecones with peanut butter and roll them in bird seed. Cut an orange in half and scoop out the flesh to make a bucket for bird seed. You can cover apples or make an edible garland like we did here. Set your bird feeders outside in a tree near a window so you can bird watch!
  5. Make a teepee or fort with sticks- This can be a mini version or a large size for kids to go into. We have woods right behind our house to build this but if you don’t have access to a forest, try gathering up small sticks from fallen branches in your back yard and make a tiny version for their toys!
  6. Go sledding
  7. Have hot cocoa or roast marshmallows by a campfire
  8. Carve a hiking stick – my son got his first pocket knife and we have been teaching him how to safely use it and keep control of the blade. If your kiddo is old enough, you can have them carve out notches and designs on a walking stick.
  9. Make bark rubbings with paper and crayons
  10. Shovel a neighbor’s driveway or front porch- this gets kids outside and teaches them how to be a good neighbor!
  11. Look for animal tracks in the snow- we see all sorts of wild animal tracks out here but even inner city parks have animal tracks you can hunt for! Try having your child copy the track in the snow, or take a picture of it on your phone for your child to sketch or paint later when you’re at home.
  12. If you have access to evergreen trees, look for small fallen branches and twigs and have your child collect them in a basket or bag to take home. You can have them make their very own wreath. Read our tutorial here.
  13. Check out your local state parks for any upcoming classes or guided hikes- they are usually free (or have a very low cost per person) and have lots of different types of classes. From birdwatching to snowshoeing, to guided evening hikes… I always look on Facebook and check out our state’s park website. If you are local to Montana you can visit the park’s page here.
  14. Make an evergreen and pine-cone mandala in the forest- Let your child gather up any supplies you can find outside- pinecones, rocks, twigs, evergreen boughs, berries, grasses etc and let them create a mandala or a picture with the items.
  15. Have a snowball fight!
  16. Gather pine needles to make pine needle bath salts- If you don’t have any pine trees in your yard, see if a neighbor has one! Nothing like a relaxing hot bath after a long cold hike in the woods! You can learn how to make pine bath salts here.
  17. Try a winter scavenger hunt! There are plenty on Pinterest you can print off for free or you can create your own. Here is one we really like : winter adventure hunt
  18. Go ice skating- if you don’t own your own skates, see if you have a local skating rink first. Before you invest the money in buying your entire family ice skates, I recommend renting them first to see if it’s something you and your kids enjoy!
  19. Try cross-country skiing (or skiing/snowboarding if you live in the mountains like we do)
  20. Make a bird’s nest
  21. Make frozen suncatchers
  22. Go on a night hike and stargaze

Is there anything I should add to my list?? What are your favorite outdoor winter activities to do as a family?

I am so jealous of this. We live in Charlotte and before than I lived in San Francisco for almost 2 decades and I don’t even remember what snow looks of feels like. Lol. I would love to be able to knock things off the bucket list but it’s so warm all around that there isn’t even any snow within reasonable driving distance.

This is such an awesome list of winter activities! We haven’t had a decent snow here in Missouri where I live in years so tons of these aren’t possible for us and it makes me so sad! I will definitely save this list for when it finally snows for real!

I wish we had snow here, we’d have so much with what we could do. It’s been 2 years since it’s snowed here in the winter.

It is so good to get the kids outdoors, especially in the winter. I feel like I get lazy in the winter and I don’t feel like being outdoors! But it really is important.

Happy Memorial Day ! Thank you to those who courag Happy Memorial Day !
Thank you to those who courageously gave their lives for our freedoms. 🇺🇸
Whew what a week ! Thank goodness for church and t Whew what a week ! Thank goodness for church and the good Word to renew and fill me with hope. Last week was a doozy and felt like it wouldn't ever end. Good & bad things happened, but more bad than I'd like. My grandma passed away and then we were in a stressful scramble for 2 days trying to figure out who could take care of our animals and dogs and garden & afford flights, a hotel and rental car to go to Chicago for the services(we ended up just having to book a flight for me & Liam and my husband and Theo will stay behind to hold down the homestead). We had a big playhouse we bought off FB marketplace delivered that Nate and Liam have been repairing and painting. It's turning out great ! I know many memories will be made in there, and I can't wait to share the before & afters. Though my poor husband has way too many projects going on at once again. 😬
My dog tried to eat baby bunnies. Twice 🤦‍♀️ Liam got some kind of poison ivy or poison oak rash all over and now today it has gotten pretty bad. His poor little cheek is all red and swollen and he's miserably itchy. Last night while driving home from a restaurant, I hit a coyote that jumped across the highway. Our brand new car's bumper is wrecked.
The other day I went to the garden to find all the marigolds I planted next to my tomatoe plants died out of nowhere, and something is eating my pole beans. 🙃
How I've been coping ?
1. Finally cracking open a prayer journal I got for Christmas from my best friend and pouring my heart out.
2. Spurts of intense deep cleaning that makes me utterly exhausted
3. Trying to plan a couple fun things while Liam and I are in Chicago for a few days. Liam was SO excited it would just be us two going on this trip because we don't get much time just the two of us since Theo was born. I want to make the best of it and think it will be nice for the focus to be on Liam for a few days.

Even though life has been busy and crazy and sad, I still just feel incredibly grateful and blessed for what the Lord has given me and my family. I'm ready to be home and hug my family and celebrate the beautiful life of my Grandma Alice.
Do you have plans to go camping with your kids thi Do you have plans to go camping with your kids this Summer ? I have a blog post from a few years ago that has a free printable kids packing list. This checklist gives kids an easy to follow list to be independent and responsible for their own pack for a weekend camping trip.
I don't know if we'll get to camping before baby gets here in July, but we plan to camp this Autumn for just short weekend getaways.
Now that Liam is 3 years older since creating that checklist, I may even add a couple more things. A tick remover to be added to his first aid kit would be helpful, and having his own bug spray.
Head ro the blog (link in my bio) to see the list and let me know if you'd add anything to it ! 😊
Tell me about your camping trips this Summer ! I'd love to know ⛺️
Yesterday Bowie brought home a limp baby bunny tha Yesterday Bowie brought home a limp baby bunny that I'm guessing was about 10 or so days old. His eyes were barely open. I had to scoop him up and push my dog out of the way who was super confused as to why I was so mad at him. I kept him warm and he snuggled into my arm and belly and fell asleep 😭 Liam searched and searched the thick brush at the edge of the forest, and deep into a thorn-covered bush, there was the little burrow with a few other little baby bunnies. He snuggled right back in next to them.
Bowie got into their burrow again today ! 😩 Liam was devastated, but I think they're alright.
Then we realized a finch made a beautiful nest with 3 little eggs in our shed, so we have to find a new home for the sweet nest as we're having our shed moved soon on our property to use as a chicken coop and to make way for building a garage. Any tips on how to safely move a bird's nest? 😬
And before anyone comes at me for not wearing gloves to pick this little babe up, there was no time. And it's a myth that a mama rabbit will reject their young just because they smell weird. We've had baby bunnies before and I'm guessing mama just gave them a good bath.
One of the most important people in my life made h One of the most important people in my life made her way up to heaven yesterday. My grandma Alice, my boy's GG, I imagine is slow dancing with Grandpa John and he's smiling with his blue eyes and saying "about time, Alice". My Grandma raised 5 children, was devoted to her church, gave to charities that were close to her heart, had many friends, traveled all over the world, and loved her husband fiercely. She was an amazing mother and THE best grandmother. I never went to her house without a proper tea time complete with cookies and little snacks. She took care of my family when my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 acute Leukemia when I was just 3 months old.
She was one of the first people I would call with good news, like when Nate proposed or I found out I was pregnant, or we were buying a house. She gave the best warm sincere hugs. Her laugh was contagious. I like to think my love for singing, roses, history, birds, and hosting comes from her. She made holidays so fancy and special. If I close my eyes I can hear the crackle of the fireplace at an Aubele Christmas party with a house full of Aubele's talking louder and louder with the smell of coffee and sweets in the dining room on the buffet. Laughter & warmth filling every inch of that house. I have always dreamed of a large family because of her. She was an amazing storyteller and often told me stories of our ancestors. And we have some pretty crazy family stories! She was proud to be Ojibwa and often reminded me to be proud as well. She was an amazing seamstress and made her grandchildren dolls & dresses & teddy bears. Family was the most important thing to her, and I knew at a young age that serving my own family someday was also what I wanted to do.
Even though she passed yesterday, I have been mourning my grandma for over a year. Dementia took hold of my sweet Grandma Alice and I couldn't call her on the phone anymore. When I saw her this April, she had no idea who I was or who my Dad, her own son, was. I couldn't call to tell her I was pregnant with my 3rd son. I couldn't call to tell her I moved from MT to VA and that we bought a homestead. My grandma has been gone for some time👇🏼
