How To Throw An Epic Nerf War Birthday Party

For my son’s 9th birthday, his only request was chocolate cake and an epic Nerf battle with his friends. Since this year is his golden birthday and we will be moving a couple hours from our friends in the next few months, I wanted this birthday to be extra special. As a host of kid birthday parties I usually go ALL out on decor and games and spend a lot of time on the little details. For this party, however, most of our budget went to renting a big gym for the party and had little left for decor. I know that decorations are usually not too appreciated by kiddos this age anyways. So I kept it very simple and went with making most of the decor myself. I figured I would share the printables I made for anyone else on a tight budget that wants to throw an epic Nerf war birthday party. I also had little time to plan and organize this party as we are busy getting our home ready to list soon! But I think it all came together nicely and the kids had an absolute blast.

I first want to apologize for the truly terrible quality of the photos for this blog post. Lighting was not on my side and I just snapped a few very quick photos with my phone. The gym we rented only gave us 40 minutes to set up before the party started. That meant dragging all the tables and chairs from a back room out to the gym, setting up the food and labels, favors, target practice zone, blow up the Nerf battle barricades, and the plates, cups etc. I normally spend a solid couple of hours setting up and fine tuning the food display and decor. I just did not have that as an option this time. I didn’t even get to hang up all the steamers, banners and balloons I had brought with! But again, I don’t think the kids cared that the room was a bit bare. The only thing I do really wish we had was more large boxes. We just didn’t have time to find more but the kids used them as forts/barricades during the battles and they were just so much fun. A few more extra large boxes would have been perfect.

The Food

I wanted to keep the food as easy as possible to travel with and clean up. We had pizzas delivered an hour after the party started, simple snacks, and cake/cupcakes. To make it a little more fun, I did make food labels. You can download all the printables I made HERE. I would print them out on thick cardstock. I intentionally picked food that would not need cutlery and then forgot about the cake! A friend came to the rescue by running home quickly to bring us some plastic forks. OOPS! And do not forget a knife to cut the cake like I did.

My son’s favorite cookies are the chewy Chips Ahoy Chocolate chip Cookies
cheese puffs are always a hit with kids
Tortilla chips and a 7 layer bean dip from Costco was gobbled up by both parents and kiddos
Cupcakes from Safeway Bakery that I added some DIY cupcake toppers to.
cake from Safeway bakery
For drinks we had two bottles of orange soda, lots of bottled water, and several cases of blue gatorade
Balloons are from the Safeway floral dept. Blue cake plates, table covers, and white napkins are from Dollar Tree, Orange lunch plates are from Walmart

Nerf War Party- The Favors

Amazon has this pack of favors for 16 kids at a very reasonable price. Each child got to “gear up” for the battle and then take their gear home. We gave them each safety glasses, a bandana, and a wrist bullet holder filled with bullets.

Black frames to display the signs are from Dollar Tree

Nerf War Party- Target Practice

We started the party off with some target practice, which quickly turned into shooting each other. I do wish I had time to set more up for this area, but it was still fun.

My hubby about 3 minutes to draw these faces on the balloons for the kids to shoot at. I think they turned out pretty good!

we had bins of ammo everywhere!

check out this arsenal! On the invites we told guests to bring their favorite nerf gun but that we had plenty if they didn’t have one

The Nerf War

This gym is so large that it would have been difficult to fill the space. But it was really nice to have so much room for the kids to run around for hours! We set up a few boxes and inflatable Nerf barricades that were light enough for the kids to move them around build forts.

Towards the end of the party, I surprised the kids with turning off all the lights, blasting dance music, and handing out glow stick bracelets from the Dollar Tree while a disco ball set the mood for a glow-in-the-dark Nerf battle/dance party!

This was the first time hosting a birthday party not at our home so though it was amazing to not have to clean my entire house before and after the party, there was a LOT of stuff to pack in the car, set up, and then take down. And I forgot forks for the cake and a knife to cut the cake. oops! There are definitely pros and cons of renting out a room like this. For a Nerf war, a gym is just perfect! But I do wish I had more time to finish setting everything up before guests arrived. I am already thinking of different birthday party themes for next year. I just love throwing parties !

The highlights were the stingrays showing off and squirting water at us, and the birds eating out of Liam's hand. For Theodore, it was all just fascinating. Every animal got an "ooo" and "awww" and wide eyes and a pudgy little finger pointing at it or a little hand excitedly waving high.
Then we spent some time at the little toddler play area in the mall where Theo hugged every kid there and had the biggest smile on his face the whole time.
I would say this week's homeschool field trip was a success!
Next week we're checking out our local library, and the week after that, the children's museum.
It's always so fun to explore a new area. ☺️

I don't always get a few quiet moments to myself, I don't always get a few quiet moments to myself, but when I do, I make the most of it !
I put on a homemaker or homesteading podcast, light a candle, sip hot tea...
It gives me time to slow down and take deep breaths, and relax a bit. (And I'll be honest, this time often also has a good snack involved or some dark chocolate I hid on the top shelf of the pantry πŸ˜†)

I spent some time yesterday during nap time restocking some herbs in my new apothecary cabinet. I filled jars of nettle, peppermint, red raspberry leaf, and rosemary. These dark amber jars are on Amazon and pretty perfect for storing herbs !
I'm dreaming of what herbs I'll be drying from my garden to add to these shelves 🀩

I'm curious- if you use herbs in your home, what are your top 3 most used ?
S'mores, burning brush, snuggling up with a blanke S'mores, burning brush, snuggling up with a blanket, and admiring our new house on the hill.

We've been busy setting up our new home, finding places for everything, and thrifting some furniture. Theo is already use to the new house and his new room. He loves the playroom in the basement and having a real bath tub!
Liam had his first playdate on Friday, and we're planning out his lego table this week. Nate has been busy fixing things around the house and helping me hang art and things all over.
It feels good to be finding a new rythm again. To have a regular bath night, and cooking big meals we eat around the table my grandpa built. We're dreaming of the garden this Spring, what fencing we can put up for animals, what color to paint the house...
and it just feels so so good to be in our own home again where we can do what we want and plan and dream for the future.
We got this gorgeous 1964 Thomasville china hutch We got this gorgeous 1964 Thomasville china hutch for $100 off FB marketplace! 🀩 It took 2 trips an hour away to bring this big gal home.
This is by far my most favorite piece of furniture I've ever owned. My original plan for this piece was to hold and display all my china, tea cups, and table linens.
But I also needed storage for all my herbs, herbal books, tinctures, salves, etc. I added a few jars of herbs and knew this needed to be a moody apothecary cabinet stat!
I threw a bunch of other decor and little things I love in there. I'm sure I'll rearrange it a dozen times before I love it. My goal is for two whole shelves to be filled with dried herbs from our garden by Fall. 🀍
I've got candles in a drawer, tablecloths in another, and the top drawer is random things, supplies and tinctures. The right cupboard is holding all my vases & jars, and the left cupboard is holding all my herbal and homesteading magazines.

What is the best FB marketplace find you've scored ??
I think this is my favorite!
I stopped by a children's resale store today after I stopped by a children's resale store today after Theo & I finally got in to see a chiropractor.
Best $18 I've spent, my goodness. He's been going down over and over, giggling and being silly and saying "ooo". When we go to a park, it's hard to get this kid away from the slide, so I would say sliding is one of his hobbies πŸ˜†
I just never want to forget this age. I can barely remember Liam when he was around this age - 17 months old is crazy and exhausting, but so so fun!
He wants to do what we are doing- putting on his shoes, brushing his teeth, combing his hair... he already wants to be a "big boy" and do things himself, but he still loves his mama sooo much and wants to snuggle all day long. 🀍
